Master of Varasto – Sami Jokinen: “Involved in all phases of the project”
The warehouse team leader at Raumaster Paper Oy’s Pori office, Sami Jokinen, organizes numerous tasks in various directions on a daily basis. The warehouse plays a central role in the daily routine of strict schedules. Staying calm is essential in the midst of a rush.
Sami Jokinen has just finalized organizing the transportation of the required components from the warehouse located in Pihlava, Pori, to Lasitie where they will be transferred to assembly according to the planned schedule.
Jokinen has worked as the warehouse team leader since February 2024. He started as a warehouse employee in October 2022.
“I came into the house first with one year contract, and even then, discussions about the future were taking place. When the former team leader Timo Nyroos knew that he was going to retire, not only my continuation was agreed upon, but also my transition to the role of a team leader. Timo still remains present at the warehouse, offering me guidance”, says Jokinen.
"You must constantly be aware of the progress of the projects."
Living in Pori, Jokinen, who was trained as a vehicle mechanic, previously worked for eight years at VR as a locomotive driver-switch operator. He also has former experience of warehouse work.
“Warehouse work is versatile, because it includes multiple different phases – we receive, sort, gather, pack and send out components and parts to many different locations. I also arrange transportation. I am responsible in ensuring that there is stock available, and that it moves according to the planned schedules.”
At the center of scheduled daily routines
The Lasitie warehouse of Raumaster Paper, as well as two rental warehouses in Pori send components for example to assembly, coating and painting. Components to subcontractor assemblies are sent all over Finland, Estonia and even Poland. The project and spare part items are delivered all across the world.
“Our daily life is precisely scheduled because the warehouse is actually involved in almost every stage of the project. Therefore, we must constantly be aware of the progress of each project and manufacturing in the big picture, Jokinen tells.
The warehouse workers also need to know the equipment and understand details, because in a way, they are also conducting quality control. All items are checked upon arrival.
“Succession requires calmness and the ability to find out what is done, where to and in what way. Currently we have multiple ongoing projects, and the pace is intense, but there is no benefit in rushing. You need to be precise and keep your thoughts focused on the current task.”
Self-directed and proactive professionals
Under the supervision of the foreman, Jokinen is supervising a team of four full-time employees, as well as a crew of five seasonal workers during summertime. As the team leader, he ensures among other things, that the warehouse has a positive working atmosphere and that the team operates closely together.
“We have highly skilled workforce. Everyone knows what to do, so things progress as planned, as if by their own force. Even the temporary employees are very self-directed, proactive and competent”, Jokinen praises.
“As a team leader, I consider myself calm. My strengths are sociability and interaction skills. This is emphasized in the central role of the warehouse, as I communicate practically daily not only with the warehouse team, but also with installers, drivers, planning, purchasing and assembly.”
Master of Varasto – so how do you master warehouse activities?
Sami Jokinen, the warehouse team leader, Raumaster Paper Oy: The warehouse work has multiple phases, because the warehouse is actually involved in almost every stage of the project in some way. The daily life is precisely scheduled, and we make sure that the warehouse does not obstruct success. Everything that is done needs to be high quality with high standards from start to finish. Tasks run smoothly when done accurately and calmly even when things get really hectic.
